NEIL BIEFF 1980s Russian Princess Evening Ball Gown Antique Gold Lace Couture
Stunning vintage 1980s elegant black & antique gold silk lace structured strapless evening gown with full ball skirt by Niel Bieff, size 2/4, in mint condition from an estate collection of designer gowns & couture clothing in NYC. The ensemble harkens to the designs of Zandra Rhodes back in the 8os and has a Russian princess vibe, the gown your wear to the International Ball or to the fanciest formal ever. It's a 2pc look, but the strapless gown is the showpiece, and I feel it can be worn without the bolero (just saying: the bolero looks hot with jeans worn as a cropped jacket). I could not fit the jacket on my busty 35" bust mannequin, just saying--the best bust is a 31" to 32. Neil Bieff is still in business, and sells through Mary Jane Denzer in White Plains, NY, but back in the day--the 80s--his dresses were are Bergdorf Goodman and Martha, and at the top tier specialty shops like Miss Jackson's in Tulsa, Wilkes-Bashford, Neiman Marcus, and Ultimo in Chicago.

The smart couture customer who wanted a more personalized approach to a fitting in NYC went to Bieff, and these gowns are not easy to find--this one as wearable now as it was back then. It doesn't look dated, and for the right event it is exactly the dress to wear. This gown looks unworn; no blemishes, no rips or marks, or real signs of wear. It has been stored away for years in a smoke & pet free home.

The lace is relatively wrinkle resistant so a quick blast of steam to the skirt and some minor steaming in the bodice and you could run out the door to the ball. Size: 4 - both pieces labeled (this can fit a 2/4; xs to s; the bust is 32 A B, the waist is 25" to 26"; the hips are free). Fabric: Not labeled but this is a high end silk lace and tulle under skirt.

Notes: I could not fit the dress on my size 6 mannequin, hence I have not shown it from the back--I could not zip it; there is an inset zipper in back of gown; fully lined; the jacket has buttons in front, and is fully lined; shoulder pad construction in the jacket. Measurements: with garment laid flat (with pertinent dimensions). To easily find out if a garment is in your sizevintage sizing is hardly accuratecheck a garment (that fits you perfectly) with a tailors tape or tape measure & compare those with mine (then write those measurements down so you always have them handy when you shop online). Bust is measured under the arm from side to side, for instance, and doubled would be your bust size ie. 17 across the bust = 32 to 34 bust.

The across the back measurement, seam to seam, opposite the bust, often determines a bra band sizeif the front, stretched, measurement for a 16 back width, is 17, the right size would be a 32 B cup which adds the darting in the front. 16-1/2 across the bust, underarm, side to side. 44 length from side of arm hole/bust line side to hemline side. 35 length from waist seam to hemline front. 13 across the waist; there are snaps to hold the waist in place.

16" across the back; 17" across the front, stretched. 15-1/4 across the shoulder width, seam/seam. 12-1/4 length, measured from back of neckline to hemline rear. I have lived in NYC for 30 years since the late 80s and have been in and around fashion and retail for decades. I started my career in New York City in the late 1980s dressing display windows at Henri Bendel & the elegant Bergdorf Goodman on Fifth Avenue in the glory days of real story-telling windows.

It was there that I learned the art of styling designer clothing & creating an aspirational & romantic mood with merchandise that helps build a relationship with the clothes we wear, and the emotion that people have with properly presented merchandise. I had access to the finest luxury designer clothing like Claude Montana, Pauline Trigere, Coco, Mr Beene and others, and learned about expert seam construction, the feel of good fabrics, the details that matter, and the high tech fabrics that are constantly innovating the marketplace. It was also a time (the 80s) when the shift in the social food chain began to change, a time when the Ladies Who Lunch began to be replaced by a new moneyed group who changed the way retail was conducted, and I always longed for the days when shopping was an event, a treat, and madame was served champagne in dressing rooms and the clothes were not thrown on rounder racks in discount departments. My mother also wore lots of Bonnie Cashin in the 1960s and 1970s so I was aware of the modern minimalists, and sought them out for her when I found them. Since Im shopping constantly, and love fancy estate sales and sample sales, I scour them regularly and with great skill; the result is an online shop that I consider a finely curated collection of vintage clothing, home accessories, & mid century odds and ends from high end homes in the New York City area.

I love helping source stuff, and just KNOW that I have tons more stuff than is listed here, so if you are in film or television production just ask for specifics and I will probably have something for you, or be able to understand what you are looking for without wasting your time. I have been in the biz and know how it works. Check out my other listings.
