Rare to find, Princess style, it is a bodice and skirt all in one without a waist seam, although there is a waistband on the inside of skirt. The overall effect of this glorious gown is to be a long line from top to bottom. The bodice extends past the waist down over the hips where it combines with the fashionable (lightly protruding) small pad bustle skirt. Completely lined in soft brown cotton it is machine and hand sewn.A narrow stand up neck, a full front closure w 16 burgundy and gold floral stamped buttons along with 4 more on each side of the sleeve cuffs that are adorned with beautiful layers of ivory Victorian most likely handmade lace. Matching narrow accordion pleat trims surround the top and sleeve cuffs. Take note to the off shade (purple) small crochet pocket on the left side that I can only assume possibly may have been for holding a chatelaine or even a dance card. As it joins the skirt and lays over a bustle, the back of the bodice is just as lovely as the front.
The magnificent skirt is extremely detailed, very elaborately designed; I personally cannot imagine constructing it and the time that was consumed to create it. Folds, pleats, draping etc is the complicated construction and meticulous sewing. Bows, ruching, narrow accordian pleated trim, ruffles and more accent this exquisite dress including the very large odd shaped protuding bow on the right side. Being constructed by a very knowledgeable and experienced seamstress, this must have been quite an expensive dress, I can only think it must have been made in a smaller town and had it been created in a metropolitan area it would have had a waistcincher w a label from a well known shop. It is in grand condition, I have not found any holes or seam openings; overall it is quite clean with only a bit of small dark areas that are not noticeable.
It is a small petite size; Approx measurements; 28" /30" bust, 23" waist, 13.5" shoulder to shoulder, 43" hips and 50" mid shoulder to hemline. This is one of the most splendid gowns I have had the pleasure of owning in many years, the style is an era that I always have found it hard to find because the natural form fitting design was only popular for a very short time.
Acquiring it will be a fabulous addition to any serious collection. Our storage and office areas are smoke free environments. If you feel there is an issue please allow us an opportunity to communicate with you.
