An original Victorian latter 1870s era to early 1880s high fashion and extremely embroidered upper class splendid lady's gown. Created in a lovely shade of deep burgundy super soft wool challis fabric, it is heavily Hand embroidered. Although, they cannot do it justice, the photos must be a part of this description. Rare to find, Princess style, it is a bodice and skirt all in one without a waist seam. The overall effect of this glorious gown is to be a long line from top to bottom. The bodice extends past the waist down over the hips with a front overskirt and where in the back it originally combined with a small pad bustle skirt; you can see, it has been removed. Completely lined in soft blue (not typical white) cotton, it is machine and hand sewn. The embroidery was completed into the lining, the inner seams are hand edged; these are evident of a very expensive dress. 2 high double layer lace neck that is even created with hints of light blue and off white to accent the blue in the extraordinary embroidery. The bodice is full front closure w 16 beautiful red round balls that are cut w tiny silver designs; they are steel shank and since they are always cold to the touch I suspect they are metal. The long slender sleeves are cuffed with narrow vertical knife pleats created with Satin fabric. The underskirt has a large red fabric pocket which is covered by the overskirt yet, is easily accessible for the lady to easily reach down into.
As you can see, the back bustle area has been removed. The back hemline is finished with 12 double layer box pleats. But then for some reason put to the side and never completed.
Being constructed by a very knowledgeable and experienced seamstress, this must have been quite an expensive dress, I can only think it must have been made in a smaller town and had it been created in a metropolitan area it would have had a waist cincher w a label from a well known shop. It is in grand extremely good condition, extremely clean; only a few very tiny moth holes. Approx measurements; 34" bust, 24" waist, 14" shoulder to shoulder, fuller hips and 49" mid shoulder to hemline. This princess style is an era that I always have found it hard to find because the natural form fitting design was only popular for a very short time.
It is a splendid gown and I believe anyone that has some knowledge and magic fingers can use a lovely brocade or even a close to matching wool challis to recreate a back skirt. It will be lovely with a not so full bustle or do a complete recreation.
Acquiring it will be a fabulous addition to any serious collection. Our storage and office areas are smoke free environments.
